questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Which area in Cebu has the best beaches?

It varies by what you are looking for. Mactan Island's resort beaches (particularly at Shangri-La and Crimson) are polished, calm, and well-maintained — ideal for families and non-adventurous swimmers. Malapascua Island's Bounty Beach is one of the finest naturally beautiful white-sand beaches in the Visayas — fine powder sand, clear blue water, and a relaxed island atmosphere. The Camotes Islands (particularly Santiago Bay and Lake Danao) offer remote beaches with a castaway feel. The south Cebu coast around Badian has hidden coves accessible by pump boat.

Are there beaches near Cebu City for day trips?

Yes — Mactan Island (connected to Cebu City by two bridges, 30–45 minutes by car or taxi) has accessible resort beaches. Several resort hotels on Mactan offer day-pass arrangements that include beach and pool access. For public beaches near the city, Mactan's Buyong Beach and Agus Beach are accessible without resort fees. For more pristine beaches, Camotes Islands (2 hours by ferry from Danao Port, north of Cebu City) is the most popular day-trip or overnight beach escape from the city.

Is it worth going all the way to Malapascua just for the beach?

Malapascua is primarily a diving destination, and most visitors combine the beach with thresher shark diving. However, Bounty Beach — the island's main beach — is genuinely beautiful and increasingly visited by non-divers seeking a remote island getaway. If you are not diving, expect a peaceful, low-key atmosphere, excellent snorkelling from the beach, and a handful of casual beachfront restaurants. The 4–4.5 hour journey from Cebu City (bus to Maya + boat) is manageable for at least a 2-night stay. Going purely for the beach without diving is less common but absolutely worthwhile for those who make the journey.
