Guam's beaches are the island's defining attraction — fine white sand, calm turquoise water, and year-round warm temperatures (28–30°C). Tumon Bay is the main tourist beach, calm, clear, and lined with hotels. Gun Beach is quieter and a local favourite for snorkelling. Ritidian Beach in the far north is a protected wildlife refuge with pristine reef and sea turtles. Ypao Beach Park offers free parking, picnic facilities, and gentle waves. Southern beaches like Umatac Bay and Merizo Pier are more remote but scenically dramatic.

why this category matters

How to compare the strongest options

01

Beach quality varies by use case more than by aesthetics: some beaches are best for swimming, some for surf, some for sunsets, and some for being close to your hotel base.

02

This category works best when paired with nearby stays and things-to-do pages, because a top beach that is hard to access may still be the wrong choice for your trip.

03

Calm water, shade, facilities, and traffic access often matter more than postcard looks once you narrow the shortlist.

planning notes

What to know before you book

How to compare beaches realistically

Think in terms of purpose. Families usually need gentle entry and nearby food; surfers need exposure and swell; couples often care more about sunset atmosphere and lower crowd density. Rating alone hides those differences, so the best beach for your trip is rarely the most famous one by default.

What to combine with this page

Beach planning gets better when you also check hotels, tours, and area hubs. A strong beach stay is usually a cluster decision: where you sleep, where you eat after sunset, and whether the beach is a short walk, a scooter ride, or a full day trip.

decision guide

How to choose the right fit

A

Choose by water conditions

Calm family swimming, surf, snorkelling, and sunset lounging are different use cases. Start there before you compare beach popularity or photos.

B

Separate scenery from usability

The most dramatic beach is not always the one you will enjoy most for half a day. Access, shade, food nearby, and swim safety often matter more than postcard value.

C

Use nearby area value

A beach works better when the surrounding area supports the rest of the day with cafés, showers, sunset bars, or a second stop. Standalone beauty is only one part of beach quality.

D

Respect seasonal tradeoffs

Some beaches peak in dry season, some become surf-led in monsoon months, and others lose value when currents or wind shift. Seasonal fit is part of what makes a beach a strong choice.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best beach in Guam for snorkelling?

Tumon Bay is the most convenient — you can snorkel directly from the beach in front of most hotels, and the reef is accessible without a boat. Gun Beach offers slightly more coral diversity and fewer crowds. For serious snorkelling and the chance to see sea turtles, Ritidian Beach in the north is the best option, though it requires a car and a ranger permit.

Are Guam beaches safe for swimming?

Tumon Bay and most northern beaches are very safe — the water is calm, warm, and shallow for a good distance offshore. Ocean conditions can be rougher on the southern and eastern coasts, especially during typhoon season (August–November). Always check posted signs and flags, and never swim alone in remote areas.
