Phu Quoc Area GuideRach Vem, Phu Quoc, Vietnam
A remote northern floating village — starfish beach, stilted houses, and off-the-beaten-path Phu Quoc
Rach Vem is a small fishing community in the far north of Phu Quoc, best known for two things: a traditional floating village (làng chài nổi) where families live on stilted wooden houses above the water, and a shallow tidal beach where wild starfish gather in extraordinary numbers at low tide. The starfish beach — reached by a short boat ride or wade from the shoreline — has become one of Phu Quoc's most photographed natural curiosities, though it remains far quieter than the island's major attractions. The floating village itself offers an unvarnished look at traditional fishing life: residents raise sea bass and grouper in caged nets beneath their homes, dry fish on elevated racks, and navigate between houses by small wooden boat. Rach Vem sits about 45 minutes north of Duong Dong and is typically visited as part of a northern Phu Quoc day trip alongside Ganh Dau.

questions & answers
When is the best time to visit the starfish beach at Rach Vem?
The starfish are most visible at low tide when the water is very shallow — check a tide chart and aim to arrive within an hour either side of low tide. Mornings (before 9am) are quietest with the best light for photography. The dry season (November–April) offers the calmest, clearest water. Note that it's illegal to remove or harm the starfish — observe and photograph only, and avoid stepping on them.
How do I get to Rach Vem from Duong Dong?
Rach Vem is approximately 35 km north of Duong Dong — about 45–55 minutes by motorbike on the sealed road through Phu Quoc National Park. The route passes Cua Can and Ganh Dau, making a natural northern loop. There is no public transport to Rach Vem; motorbike rental or a private car hire from Duong Dong are the practical options. Most visitors combine it with Ganh Dau (10 minutes further northwest) in the same half-day trip.
