Dinh Cau Rock & Night Market

A small shrine perched on a rock at the mouth of the Dương Đông river, dedicated to the sea goddess and lit gold at sunset, right beside the island's liveliest night market of seafood grills, snacks, and souvenir stalls.

About

Dinh Cau, sometimes called Cau Castle or the Dinh Cau Temple, is a small shrine built onto a black volcanic rock outcrop at the mouth of the Dương Đông river, where the island's main town meets the sea. Dating in its present form to the 1930s, it is dedicated to the goddess Thiên Hậu and other sea deities, and for generations local fishermen have come to pray here for safe voyages and good catches before heading out. A short flight of steps leads up to the shrine and a little lighthouse, with views over the harbour and a popular vantage point for sunset. Just beside it sprawls the Dinh Cau Night Market, the most famous on Phu Quoc: a bustling lane of stalls selling grilled-to-order seafood, Vietnamese street snacks, fresh fruit, desserts, and souvenirs, busiest in the early evening. Together the shrine and market make the natural place to spend a first evening in Dương Đông.
