Oslob, Cebu

Whale shark encounters and ancient church ruins on the southeast coast

Oslob is a municipality on Cebu's southeastern coast best known internationally for the whale shark interaction at Tan-awan Barangay, where local fishermen feed whale sharks daily to keep them in the area. The ethical dimensions of the feeding are significant and widely debated — conservation biologists note that feeding disrupts the sharks' natural migration and behaviour patterns. For travellers who do choose to visit, the encounters are conducted in the early morning under a regulated ticketing system with a daily quota. Oslob also has other points of interest: the Sumilon Island Marine Sanctuary (accessible by boat, one of Cebu's finest snorkelling spots), the ruins of the Cuartel (Spanish-era barracks), and Tumalog Falls — a curtain waterfall in a jungle clearing just outside the town.

  • Whale shark watching at Tan-awan — the most visited marine encounter in Cebu
  • Sumilon Island — pristine marine sanctuary with excellent snorkelling
  • Tumalog Falls — a photogenic jungle waterfall 15 minutes from town

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I go whale shark watching in Oslob?

This is a personal decision. The whale sharks in Oslob are fed by fishermen to keep them present, which disrupts their natural migration and feeding behaviour. Many marine biologists and conservation organisations advise against supporting the site. Alternatives include Donsol in Sorsogon (Luzon) where sightings are from natural aggregations, and Moalboal's sardine run or Malapascua's thresher sharks as impact-free Cebu alternatives. Visitors who do go should choose operators that maintain minimum distance rules and do not allow touching.

How early do I need to be at Oslob for whale sharks?

The interaction area opens at around 6 am and becomes crowded by 8–9 am. Most organised tours from Cebu City and Mactan depart between 3–4 am to reach Oslob before the quota fills. Independent travellers catching the first Oslob-bound bus from Cebu City's South Terminal (departing around 4–5 am) can usually secure entry if they arrive by 7 am. Entry fees for foreigners are approximately ₱1,000–₱1,500.
