Malapascua Island, Cebu

Thresher shark diving and pristine Bounty Beach in north Cebu

Malapascua Island is a small, car-free island approximately 8 km off the northern tip of Cebu, accessible by pump boat from Maya Port. It is one of the most celebrated dive destinations in Southeast Asia due to its unique and reliable thresher shark encounters at Monad Shoal — a cleaning station where these elusive pelagic sharks ascend from the depths every morning to be cleaned of parasites. Dive boats from Malapascua depart before 5 am to reach the site at sunrise, when encounters are most frequent. Above water, Malapascua is an idyllic small island with a single main beach — Bounty Beach — a beautiful arc of fine white sand and calm water lined with dive resorts, restaurants, and guesthouses. The island has no motor vehicles and a distinctly slow, unhurried pace.

  • Monad Shoal thresher shark dives — one of the most reliable shark encounters on Earth
  • Bounty Beach — pristine white sand, calm water, no motor vehicles
  • Hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and diverse pelagic encounters for experienced divers

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Malapascua Island?

From Cebu City's North Bus Terminal, take a bus to Maya Port in Daanbantayan (approximately 3–3.5 hours). From Maya, pump boats run regularly to Malapascua (approximately 20–30 minutes, ₱100–₱150). The last scheduled boat from Maya is typically 5–6 pm; after this, a private boat can be arranged but costs more. Most dive resorts on Malapascua can arrange pick-up coordination if you arrive late.

Can beginner divers see thresher sharks at Malapascua?

PADI Open Water certification meets the minimum depth requirement for Monad Shoal (20–30 metres), but most operators prefer at least Advanced Open Water or 20+ logged dives due to the early wake-up time, sometimes-moderate current, and the discipline required to maintain neutral buoyancy and avoid disturbing the sharks. First-time divers should plan to log dives on Malapascua's other sites before attempting the thresher shark dive.

How many days should I spend on Malapascua?

Two nights minimum allows you one full dive day (early morning Monad Shoal thresher shark dive + afternoon dives on the island's reef sites). Three nights is ideal — the second dive day significantly increases your probability of multiple thresher shark encounters and lets you explore more of the island's diverse dive sites including Keeptang Reef, Dakit-Dakit, and the wreck of the Dona Marilyn.
