Bantayan Island, Cebu

White sand, turquoise water, and one of Cebu's most beautiful island escapes

Bantayan Island is one of the most beautiful island destinations accessible from Cebu, located 30 km off the northwest coast of Cebu province in the Visayan Sea. The island is famous for its powdery white sand beaches — particularly Santa Fe Beach and Kota Beach — and the crystal-clear turquoise water that rivals more famous Philippine beach destinations at a fraction of the price. Bantayan Town (the main settlement) is quiet and unhurried, centred around a century-old church and a central plaza. The island is reached by bus from Cebu City's North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya Port, followed by a ferry to Bantayan — a total journey of approximately 3.5–4 hours. Most visitors come for 2–3 nights of pure beach relaxation.

  • Santa Fe Beach — one of Cebu's finest white-sand beaches
  • Kota Beach — quieter, more secluded stretch popular with families
  • Bantayan Town church (Church of St. Peter and Paul) — 16th century Spanish heritage

Know Before You Base Yourself in Bantayan Island

Who Bantayan Island suits best

Bantayan is strongest for slow, easy beach time. It suits couples, families, and anyone who wants white sand without the density or pricing of the Philippines' most famous resort islands.

How long to stay

Two to three nights is the sweet spot. That gives you enough time for a long beach day, a bike or scooter loop, and a low-pressure seafood dinner without turning the transfer from Cebu City into most of the trip.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Bantayan Island from Cebu City?

From Cebu City's North Bus Terminal, take a bus or van to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio (approximately 2.5–3 hours). From Hagnaya, passenger ferries run regularly to Bantayan Island (approximately 1 hour, ₱180–₱220). Total journey: 3.5–4 hours. The last ferry from Hagnaya is typically around 5–6 pm; check current schedules. Overnight stays are recommended — the island is too far for a comfortable day trip.

What is there to do on Bantayan Island?

Bantayan is primarily a beach destination. Activities include swimming and snorkelling (the shallow reef near Ogtong Cave is excellent), island hopping to surrounding smaller islands, renting a bicycle to explore the island (it is flat and easy cycling), visiting the historic church in Bantayan Town, and eating the island's exceptionally fresh seafood at the beachside restaurants in Santa Fe. It is an ideal destination for those seeking quiet beaches without the resort-hotel crowds of Mactan.
