Cebu City, Cebu

History, food, and the island's beating heart

Cebu City is the capital of Cebu province and the oldest city in the Philippines, founded by the Spanish in 1565. It is the commercial, cultural, and culinary centre of the island, home to Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño (the oldest Catholic church in the Philippines), and Fort San Pedro. The city is also the undisputed home of Cebu lechon — the whole roasted pig that Anthony Bourdain famously called the best pig he had ever tasted. Beyond its historic core, Cebu City is a modern metropolis with IT Park's gleaming office towers, Ayala Center Cebu, Carbon Market, and a thriving café and restaurant scene. It serves as the main transport hub for buses south to Oslob and Moalboal, ferry connections to Bohol and other Visayan islands, and flights throughout the Philippines.

  • Oldest street in the Philippines — Colon Street — runs through the heart of the city
  • Home to the best lechon houses: CNT Lechon, Zubuchon, and Rico's Lechon
  • Hub for day trips to Oslob whale sharks, Kawasan Falls, and Bohol ferry connections

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cebu City known for?

Cebu City is best known for its Spanish colonial heritage (Magellan's Cross, Basilica del Santo Niño, Fort San Pedro), Cebu lechon (widely considered the best in the Philippines), and as the main transport hub for south Cebu day trips and inter-island ferry connections. It is also the commercial and culinary capital of the Visayas.

Is Cebu City safe for tourists?

Cebu City is generally safe for tourists in the main areas — IT Park, Ayala Center, Crossroads, Colon Street, and the heritage area near the Basilica. Standard urban precautions apply: stay aware in crowded markets, use Grab (not random taxis), and avoid poorly lit side streets at night. The tourist areas are well-policed and very busy.

How do I get from Cebu City to Mactan Island?

Two bridges connect Cebu City to Mactan Island — the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge and the newer Marcelo Fernan Bridge. By Grab or taxi it takes 25–45 minutes depending on traffic. The fare from Cebu City to Mactan resorts runs approximately ₱150–₱300 by Grab. Jeepneys and multi-cabs also cross the bridge but are slower and less convenient for tourists with luggage.
