About
Mactan Island, linked to Cebu City by two bridges and home to the island's international airport, is the main beach-and-resort base for most visitors — the place many people actually stay even when they say they're 'in Cebu'. Its eastern shore is lined with beach resorts and dive centres, and while the beaches themselves are modest by Philippine standards, Mactan's real draw is the water around it: it's the launch point for island-hopping trips to nearby Hilutungan, Nalusuan, and Pandanon, with their reefs, marine sanctuaries, and sandbars for snorkelling and diving. The island also carries deep historical weight as the site of the 1521 Battle of Mactan, where the local chieftain Lapu-Lapu defeated and killed Magellan — commemorated at the Lapu-Lapu Shrine and Mactan Shrine — and it remains a centre of guitar-making and the famous sutukil seafood-grill restaurants. Its convenience, right by the airport, makes it the natural first or last stop on a Cebu trip.
