Top 10 Things to Do in Phuket

Ranked by verified guest reviews — from Phi Phi island trips to Thai cooking classes

By Island Seeker Editorial Team·Updated March 2026

Phuket is one of Southeast Asia's busiest tourist destinations — for good reason. The island serves as the gateway to some of Thailand's most spectacular offshore scenery: James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts, the crystal-clear waters of the Similan Islands Marine National Park, Phi Phi Island's iconic Maya Bay, and dozens of smaller islands in the Andaman Sea. On the island itself, Phuket Old Town's Sino-Portuguese heritage, ethical elephant sanctuaries, Thai cooking classes, and world-class diving provide substance beyond the beach. Rankings below are based on verified guest review ratings.

How are these rankings determined?

Rankings are based on verified guest review ratings submitted through the Island Seeker directory. Businesses are sorted by average rating (highest first), with ties broken by total review count and featured status. The list is updated in real time as new verified reviews are submitted. Only active, verified listings appear.

insider tips

What to Know Before You Go

Book Phi Phi and Similan day trips in advance in peak season

The most popular boat tours — Phi Phi Islands, James Bond Island, and Similan liveaboards — book out weeks in advance during peak season (December–March). Many tour operators consolidate passengers across agencies, so the same boat often has seats sold through multiple channels. Booking directly with a reputable operator or through your resort concierge gives you better control over departure time and boat quality.

Maya Bay has regulated entry since its 2022 reopening

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh (filming location of The Beach) was closed 2018–2022 for reef recovery. Since reopening, entry is regulated: boat anchoring in the bay is prohibited (boats must anchor offshore and guests swim or kayak in), visitor numbers are capped, and the beach closes to visitors at 6 pm. Early morning trips (departing Phuket at 6 am) reach Maya Bay before the main crowd. The reef recovery has been significant — snorkelling is now much better than pre-closure.

Choose ethical elephant sanctuaries, not rides

Phuket and Phang Nga province have numerous elephant facilities — but they vary enormously in ethics. Facilities that offer elephant rides use bull-hooks and training methods widely condemned by animal welfare organisations. Ethical sanctuaries allow walking, bathing, and feeding alongside the elephants without riding or performing. Look for operators certified by Thailand's Elephant Nature Park standards, and specifically check that no riding, chains, or hooks are used.

Phuket Old Town is worth a dedicated half-day

Phuket Town's Old Quarter, lined with 100-year-old Sino-Portuguese shophouse architecture, is one of the most distinctive streetscapes in Southeast Asia. Thalang Road, Dibuk Road, Phang Nga Road, and Krabi Road form the core of the old town. The area has excellent museums (Phuket Thai Hua Museum, Chinpracha House), Peranakan cafes, and art galleries. The Sunday Walking Street transforms the neighbourhood into a vibrant market. Allow 3–4 hours to explore comfortably.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the number one thing to do in Phuket?

A Phi Phi Island and Maya Bay tour is consistently among the highest-rated activities in Phuket. The boat journey through Phang Nga Bay to the dramatically steep-sided islands, stopping at Maya Bay (filming location of The Beach), snorkelling over pristine coral, and visiting Phi Phi Don village, is one of Southeast Asia's most popular tourist experiences. James Bond Island day trips (through the iconic limestone karst formations of Phang Nga Bay) are a close second.

Is Phuket good for diving and snorkelling?

Phuket is one of Asia's best dive hubs. The Similan Islands National Park (best November–April) is rated among the world's top ten dive sites, with visibility of 20–30 metres, whale sharks, leopard sharks, manta rays, and vibrant hard coral. Richelieu Rock near Koh Surin is consistently rated one of the world's best dive sites. Closer to Phuket, the wrecks at Shark Point and Koh Doc Mai are good day-dive options. Most dive operators run regular day trips and liveaboards from Phuket's Chalong Bay marina.

What are the best day trips from Phuket?

The best day trips from Phuket include Phi Phi Islands (1.5-hour speedboat, Maya Bay, snorkelling, village), James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay (sea kayaking through limestone caves and hongs), the Similan Islands (live-aboard or day-trip diving), Koh Yao Noi (quiet traditional fishing island between Phuket and Krabi), and Koh Racha (excellent snorkelling 20 minutes from Chalong Bay). Elephant sanctuary visits (Phang Nga province) and Khao Sok National Park (rainforest, floating bungalows) are popular half- and full-day inland trips.

What is the best time of year to visit Phuket?

November to April is the dry season — the best time for beaches, water sports, snorkelling, and offshore island trips. December to February is peak season (most expensive, most crowded). May to October is the monsoon season — the west coast beaches can have rough seas and some boat trips are suspended, but the east coast (Koh Yao) remains largely unaffected. The Similan Islands close completely May–October to allow reef recovery. Some years the monsoon is light — check conditions before assuming the worst.
