April marks the end of Phuket's dry season — a month of two halves. Early April is still largely dry and sunny, with the warmest sea temperatures of the year. Songkran (Thai New Year, 13–15 April) transforms the island into a nation-wide water fight: streets are packed, water is everywhere, and the atmosphere is electrifying but chaotic. By late April, the first southwest monsoon rains begin to arrive, and the Similan Islands close for the season on 15 April.

Songkran — Thai New Year Water Festival
13–15 AprilThailand's most important traditional holiday transforms Phuket into a giant water fight from 13–15 April. Bangla Road in Patong and the streets of Phuket Town are the epicentres — expect to get completely soaked. A uniquely joyful experience; locals and tourists engage equally. Protect electronics.

Around 15 AprilThe Similan Islands National Park closes on approximately 15 April for the monsoon season (May–October). Any Similan diving or snorkelling trips must be booked for the first two weeks of April.
travel tips
If Songkran coincides with your visit, embrace it fully — buy a water gun from any 7-Eleven, wear clothes you don't mind getting wet, and seal all electronics in waterproof bags. The festival is one of the most joyful in Southeast Asia.
Book Songkran period accommodation months in advance — Phuket fills up completely for 13–15 April. Prices spike significantly for these three days.
Plan Similan Islands trips for the first 10–12 days of April to avoid the closure. The first half of April still has good sea conditions.
