Phuket Weather & Best Time to Visit

Phuket's dry season runs from November to April, driven by the northeast monsoon. This is when the west coast beaches — Patong, Kata, Karon, and Surin — are at their calmest and most beautiful. Skies are clear, humidity drops slightly, and the Andaman Sea turns a vivid turquoise.

December, January, and February are peak months with the highest hotel prices and largest crowds. If you're visiting for Christmas or New Year, book accommodation at least 3–4 months in advance. November and March–April offer excellent conditions with fewer tourists and lower rates.

April is the transition month: still dry but hotter (up to 35°C), and the sea may start to pick up towards the end of the month. It's also Songkran (Thai New Year), one of the country's biggest festivals.

The southwest monsoon brings Phuket's wet season from May through October. Rain typically comes in heavy afternoon bursts rather than all-day drizzle, so mornings are often still sunny and perfectly pleasant. June and September are statistically the wettest months.

West coast beaches (Patong, Kata) can have choppy surf and red warning flags prohibiting swimming. The east coast — Koh Sirey, Rawai, and nearby islands like Koh Yao — stays calmer and is accessible even during monsoon months.

Prices drop by 20–50% during the wet season, and popular hotels and activities are significantly less crowded. Experienced travellers often find May, June, and October excellent value — you're likely to get dry mornings and spectacular lightning storms in the evening. Typhoons are rare in the Andaman Sea.

November: ★★★★★ — Dry season begins, calm seas, comfortable temperatures, prices still reasonable before Christmas peak.

December–January: ★★★★★ — Peak season. Perfect weather, busiest period, highest prices. Patong and Kata beaches fully packed.

February–March: ★★★★★ — Still perfect. Slightly fewer crowds than January, ideal for diving and snorkelling.

April: ★★★★☆ — Dry but very hot. Songkran festival. Shoulder rates returning.

May–June: ★★★☆☆ — Wet season starts. Heavy rain afternoons. Good for budget travellers willing to dodge showers.

July–August: ★★★☆☆ — Wettest period for west coast. East coast and Phang Nga Bay tours often still possible.

September: ★★☆☆☆ — Wettest month statistically. Lowest prices, quietest island. Only for the flexible.

October: ★★★☆☆ — Transitioning to dry. Rain easing, seas calming. Good value with improving conditions.
