Phuket Pineapple
A small, intensely sweet, crisp-fleshed pineapple grown in Phuket's rubber-plantation shade and protected as a Geographical Indication. Lower in acid and juicier than usual, eaten chilled with salt and chilli, blended into shakes, or carried home.
About this dish
The Phuket pineapple (sapparot Phuket) is a small, prized variety grown in the dappled shade of the island's rubber and coconut plantations, and its quality is distinctive enough to have earned official Geographical Indication protection. Smaller and rounder than commercial pineapples, it has notably crisp, pale-gold flesh, very low acidity, and an honeyed sweetness, so it can be eaten right down to a core tender enough to chew. Locals enjoy it chilled and cut into spears, often with a dip of salt, sugar, and chilli that heightens the sweetness, and it is blended into some of the island's best fruit shakes. Sold from roadside stalls and markets across Phuket — frequently from the backs of pickup trucks during the harvest — it is a fragrant, refreshing local specialty and a favourite edible gift to carry off the island.
