Big Buddha (Ming Mongkol Buddha)

A 45-metre white-marble Buddha seated on Nakkerd Hill, visible from much of southern Phuket. The hilltop platform offers 360-degree views over Chalong Bay, Kata, and the interior. Free to enter, with a sarong required.

About

Phuket's Big Buddha — properly the Ming Mongkol Buddha — sits 45 metres tall on the summit of Nakkerd Hill, one of the island's highest points, where it has become a modern landmark visible from much of the south. Begun in 2004 and still partly funded by donations, the seated figure is clad in gleaming white Burmese marble that catches the light for miles. Beyond the statue itself, the draw is the hilltop's sweeping 360-degree panorama, taking in Chalong Bay, Rawai, Kata, and the green interior — one of the best free views on Phuket. It remains an active site of worship, so visitors should dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered (sarongs are lent at the entrance), and a smaller, gilded sitting Buddha and rows of tinkling brass bells add to the serene atmosphere. Go early or near sunset to beat both the heat and the tour crowds.
