questions & answers
Which area of Palawan has the best beaches?
Nacpan Beach north of El Nido is consistently rated among the Philippines' most beautiful beaches — a 4km stretch of white sand with calm turquoise water, very few visitors outside of day-trippers, and a dramatic coconut-palm-backed setting. Las Cabanas Beach just south of El Nido town has a zipline over the sea and excellent snorkelling immediately offshore. In Coron, Atwayan Beach and the shores around Twin Lagoons are among the most stunning coastal scenery. Port Barton's main beach is calm and beautiful in a simpler, quieter way. Honda Bay's island beaches near Puerto Princesa (particularly Starfish Island) are the most accessible for day-trip beach stops.
Is swimming safe in El Nido's lagoons?
Swimming in El Nido's lagoons is generally safe and the experience is outstanding. The Big Lagoon has calm, clear water 2–8m deep with good visibility. The Small Lagoon requires a brief swim through a narrow rock passage (or kayak) to enter — snorkelling here among the limestone walls is one of the best experiences in the Philippines. Shimizu Island has excellent shallow reef snorkelling suitable for beginners. Sea kayaking through the lagoons is the best way to access the quieter corners that tour boats can't reach. Note that jellyfish can be present in some lagoons seasonally — ask the guide for current conditions.
Are there beaches accessible from Puerto Princesa?
Yes — Honda Bay is the most accessible beach area from Puerto Princesa city, reached by a 20-minute tricycle or van ride to the pier and then a short bangka ride to the islands. Starfish Island, Cowrie Island, and Luli Island all have sandy beaches, snorkelling, and beach facilities. They are better suited to families and casual visitors than serious beach connoisseurs — the scenery is pleasant rather than spectacular. The Underground River at Sabang has a beach at the cave entrance worth spending time on before or after the river tour. For the finest beaches, El Nido (6 hours north) is worth the journey.
