Phuket Area GuideRawai, Phuket, Thailand

Rawai, Phuket

Local Phuket without the tourist crowds β€” fresh seafood, long-tail boats, and the sea gypsy village

Rawai occupies the southernmost tip of Phuket and has a distinctly different character from the west coast beach resorts β€” it's where many long-term expats and digital nomads choose to live, attracted by lower prices, authenticity, and proximity to the quieter beaches of Nai Harn and Yanui. Rawai Beach itself is a working fishing village rather than a swimming beach: the shoreline is shallow and muddy at low tide, but the seafood restaurants lining the promenade are among the best in Phuket. The Rawai sea gypsy (Moken) village at the southern end of the beach is one of the last traditional fishing communities in Thailand. Long-tail boats depart from Rawai pier to the offshore islands of Koh Bon, Koh Hae (Coral Island), and Koh Lone.

  • Rawai Seafood Market β€” buy fresh catch directly from boats and grill it at nearby restaurants
  • Sea Gypsy Village β€” one of Thailand's last traditional Moken fishing communities
  • Long-tail boat trips β€” day trips to Coral Island (Koh Hae) and other offshore islands

Know Before You Base Yourself in Rawai

What Rawai is actually good for

Rawai is a strong base for long stays, seafood, and easy southern Phuket exploring. It is not a classic swim-beach destination, so it suits travellers who are happy to move between bases or make short rides to Nai Harn and Yanui.

How to avoid the mismatch

Book Rawai because you want local food, boat access, and a more lived-in pace, not because you expect a resort-beach postcard outside the hotel. That expectation shift usually determines whether people love it or feel let down.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you swim at Rawai Beach?

Rawai Beach is not suitable for swimming β€” the water is shallow, murky, and recedes far at low tide. It functions as a working fishing and boat harbour rather than a swim beach. For swimming, head 5 minutes north to Nai Harn Beach, which is one of Phuket's most beautiful and swimmable beaches, or 10 minutes to Yanui Beach for snorkelling.

How do I book a boat trip from Rawai?

Long-tail boats for day trips to nearby islands depart from Rawai Pier. You can negotiate directly with boat operators on the pier for trips to Coral Island (Koh Hae, approx. 800–1200 baht per boat), Koh Bon, or Koh Lone. Snorkelling gear is usually included or available for rent. Trips typically take 30–45 minutes each way. For longer trips to Phi Phi Islands, book through tour operators in Patong or Kata.
