Family-friendly surf beach with a lively café strip and an indie travel vibe
Kata is the sweet spot of Phuket's west coast — wide enough to avoid the crowds of Patong, small enough to feel intimate, and equipped with a genuinely excellent restaurant and café scene along Kata Road. The main beach is split into Kata Yai (Big Kata) and Kata Noi (Small Kata) just to the south: Kata Yai is a broad, horseshoe-shaped bay with reliable surf in the May–October swell season, making it Phuket's best learner-to-intermediate surf break. Outside of swell season, the water is calm enough for families. The viewpoint above Kata on the road to Karon offers one of Phuket's most photographed panoramas — three bays visible simultaneously at sunset. Kata's main road has evolved into a cosmopolitan dining strip with Thai, Italian, Japanese, and Mediterranean restaurants side-by-side.

Know Before You Base Yourself in Kata
Why many travellers settle on Kata
Kata is one of Phuket's most balanced bases because it combines a usable beach, approachable surf, family-friendly hotels, and enough restaurants to avoid feeling isolated. It is less intense than Patong without feeling sleepy.
What to plan around here
If you stay in Kata, build the trip around mornings on the beach and evenings on Kata Road, then use short taxi hops for Karon, Rawai, or a one-off Patong night. It is one of the easiest areas to get right on a first trip.
Kata is Phuket's most consistent surf spot, with rideable waves from May through October during the southwest monsoon. Wave heights of 1–2 metres make it ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Several surf schools operate directly on the beach. Outside of May–October, the sea is typically flat and unsuitable for surfing but perfect for swimming.
How far is Kata from Patong?
Kata is approximately 10 km south of Patong by road — about 15–20 minutes by scooter or 20–30 minutes by taxi. Songthaew (shared minibus) services connect the beaches for a fraction of the taxi cost. Many visitors base themselves in Kata specifically to be close enough to Patong for evenings without the constant noise.
