Koh Lanta sights
Khao Mai Kaeo Caves
A cave system in the jungle of the island's interior, explored on a guided adventure that involves a muddy jungle trek, scrambling, and a squeeze through tight passages past stalactites, chambers, and bats. An adventurous half-day for the active.
About
The Khao Mai Kaeo Caves, in the jungle-covered hills of Koh Lanta's interior, are the island's best adventure for the active and curious — a genuine caving experience rather than a tidy tourist walk-through. Reaching them starts with a trek of around half an hour up a muddy, sometimes slippery jungle path (local guides lead all visits, and it's not something to attempt alone), after which you enter a network of chambers and passages by torchlight. Inside, the adventure involves clambering over rocks, squeezing through narrow gaps, climbing down a rope into a deeper chamber, and passing stalactites, stalagmites, and resident bats, sometimes ending at a small cave pool you can cool off in. It's hot, muddy, and genuinely a bit of a workout, not suited to the claustrophobic or those wanting an easy outing — but for travellers after a hands-on jungle adventure, it's a memorable half-day. Wear shoes you don't mind ruining and bring water.
