Best Activities
Ranked by verified guest reviews — updated from live ratings
Koh Lanta's activity scene is defined by the sea. Diving and snorkelling at the Mu Ko Lanta Marine Park and neighbouring sites (Koh Ha, Koh Bida, Hin Daeng, Hin Muang) are among the best in the Andaman — whale sharks and manta rays visit regularly between January and March. Island hopping to nearby limestone karst islands is a classic experience. On land, the island offers sea kayaking through mangroves, a cooking class in someone's garden, bicycle rides through rubber plantations, and the atmospheric time-warp of Lanta Old Town. Koh Lanta is not a nightlife destination — its appeal is active days and relaxed evenings.
How are these rankings determined?
Rankings are based on verified guest review ratings submitted through the Island Seeker directory. Businesses are sorted by average rating (highest first), with ties broken by total review count and featured status. The list is updated in real time as new verified reviews are submitted. Only active, verified listings appear.
insider tips
Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are among Asia's top dive sites
Located about 45 minutes by speedboat south of Koh Lanta, Hin Daeng (Red Rock) and Hin Muang (Purple Rock) are deep seamount dive sites that regularly attract whale sharks between January and April, manta rays year-round, and huge schools of pelagic fish. These are advanced open-water dives (40m+) offering some of the most spectacular marine life encounters in Southeast Asia.
The four-island tour with Emerald Cave is the unmissable day trip
The tour visits four limestone islands including Koh Mook's Emerald Cave — a sea cave you swim through in darkness for 80 metres to emerge in a hidden inland beach surrounded by jungle walls. The experience is unique and genuinely spectacular. Tours depart Saladan pier daily at 8–9 am (November–April) for THB 800–1,200 per person including lunch.
Lanta Old Town is a living piece of Malay-Thai history
Lanta Old Town on the east coast is a sea-gypsy (Chao Ley) and Chinese-Malay fishing community dating back centuries. The wooden shophouses on stilts over the water have been here for generations — some now house restaurants, coffee shops, and craft stores, but the town retains its genuine character. Visit for a morning or afternoon to see a side of Koh Lanta most tourists miss.
questions & answers
What is Koh Lanta most famous for?
Koh Lanta is most famous for its long, uncrowded beaches, excellent diving and snorkelling in the Mu Ko Lanta Marine Park, and its laid-back atmosphere. It's particularly known for being calmer and more family-friendly than Phuket or Koh Samui, attracting long-stay European travellers who want genuine Thai beach life without the party scene.
Is diving in Koh Lanta good?
Koh Lanta is one of Thailand's premier diving destinations. The surrounding marine park includes Koh Ha (five interconnected limestone caverns with excellent shallow reefs), Koh Bida Nok and Nai (large sea fans, leopard sharks, and green turtles), and the deeper sites Hin Daeng and Hin Muang — among Asia's top dive sites, where whale sharks and manta rays are reliably seen January–March. Dive operators are based in Hat Khlong Dao and offer PADI courses and day trips.
What are the best day trips from Koh Lanta?
The four-island tour (Koh Mook, Koh Kradan, Koh Chuak, and Koh Waen) is the most popular — it includes the famous Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot) on Koh Mook, accessible only by swimming through a dark cave to an inland beach hidden from view. Koh Ngai is another beautiful nearby island with good snorkelling. Most boat tours depart from Saladan pier at 8–9 am.
Can I visit Koh Lanta's national park?
Yes — Mu Ko Lanta National Park covers the southern tip of the island and the surrounding sea and islands. The park entry fee is THB 200 for foreigners. The park area has hiking trails through jungle to the lighthouse at the southern tip (a beautiful viewpoint), a beach, and sea turtle nesting sites. Snorkelling and diving within the park's marine protected area is the main draw.
