Best Dining
Ranked by verified guest reviews — updated from live ratings
Koh Lanta's restaurant scene is quieter and more authentic than Phuket or Koh Samui — long-stay travellers and European expats have cultivated a food scene that values quality and value over volume. The main dining strips follow the west-coast beaches: Hat Khlong Dao (the most popular beach) has the greatest concentration of restaurants, from casual Thai cafes and seafood grills to Western-oriented coffee shops and bakeries. Ao Phra Ae (Long Beach) has a good mix of beachfront restaurants catering to a mix of nationalities. The south of the island, particularly Kantiang Bay, has a smaller selection but some of the island's most scenic sunset dining. Lanta Old Town on the east coast has a handful of atmospheric restaurants in traditional wooden shophouses.
How are these rankings determined?
Rankings are based on verified guest review ratings submitted through the Island Seeker directory. Businesses are sorted by average rating (highest first), with ties broken by total review count and featured status. The list is updated in real time as new verified reviews are submitted. Only active, verified listings appear.
insider tips
Sunset dining at Kantiang Bay is the island's most dramatic experience
Kantiang Bay in the south of the island is one of Thailand's most beautiful bays — a perfect horseshoe of white sand flanked by jungle hills. The restaurants here face due west and catch one of the most spectacular sunsets in the Andaman. Book a table by 5pm during peak season. The 45-minute drive south from Hat Khlong Dao is part of the experience.
Lanta Old Town has the island's most atmospheric restaurants
Lanta Old Town on the east coast is a sea gypsy village of traditional wooden houses on stilts over the sea. Several restaurants have opened in converted shophouses along the main street — the views across the channel towards the mainland and the combination of local seafood and historic setting make it a unique dining experience. Worth the trip for lunch or an early dinner.
Local Thai restaurants near Saladan market offer the cheapest authentic food
For budget eating, head to Saladan town at the north of the island — the area around the ferry pier and fresh market has Thai rice-and-curry stalls and simple noodle shops charging THB 60–120 per meal. This is where local islanders eat and prices reflect it. The evening market (open most evenings during high season) is a similar excellent option.
questions & answers
What is the best restaurant in Koh Lanta?
Koh Lanta's best-rated restaurants tend to cluster along Hat Khlong Dao and Ao Phra Ae. Highly regarded options include authentic Thai restaurants serving fresh seafood at excellent value, and a few sophisticated Mediterranean and fusion places catering to the island's long-stay European crowd. Beachfront sunset restaurants at Kantiang Bay consistently earn high marks for atmosphere. Browse the current ranked list above for verified ratings.
What food is Koh Lanta known for?
Koh Lanta's food is firmly rooted in southern Thai cuisine — spicier and more coconut-forward than central Thai cooking. Key dishes include gaeng tai pla (fish kidney curry, intensely flavoured), massaman curry (milder, rich with potatoes and peanuts), pad pak (stir-fried vegetables), fresh grilled seafood (prawns, red snapper, sea bass, barracuda), and khao mok gai (southern Thai biryani). Tom yam and pad thai are available everywhere. Fresh fruit shakes — mango, watermelon, papaya — are essential in the heat.
Where should I eat in Koh Lanta?
Hat Khlong Dao has the widest variety of restaurants for all budgets. Ao Phra Ae (Long Beach) has excellent beachfront dining with sunset views. Saladan town (the northern pier area) has local Thai food stalls and a market — great for cheap breakfast and lunch. Kantiang Bay in the south has superb sunset seafood restaurants but fewer options overall. Lanta Old Town has a handful of atmospheric places in traditional shophouses worth a special trip.
Is there vegetarian or vegan food in Koh Lanta?
Yes — Koh Lanta has better vegetarian and vegan options than many Thai beach destinations, partly due to its long-stay European visitor base. Many restaurants offer vegetarian versions of Thai curries and stir-fries on request. Several dedicated vegetarian and vegan cafes operate along Hat Khlong Dao and Ao Phra Ae. Southern Thai cuisine uses a lot of fish sauce and shrimp paste — always ask if strict plant-based eating is important.
