Visiting Phu Quoc in August

August is virtually identical to July in Phu Quoc — southwest monsoon weather, frequent afternoon rain, rough Long Beach, Sao Beach as the calmer alternative, and a moderate crowd of European and Vietnamese summer visitors. Vietnamese Independence Day (2 September) creates a long weekend surge at month's end. The monsoon begins to ease very slightly by late August in some years, though the full turnaround doesn't happen until November. Prices remain below dry season levels.

Travel Tips for August

Late August can occasionally have slightly calmer days as the monsoon begins its slow weakening — ask locally about current conditions and take advantage of any extended calm windows for An Thoi Islands trips.

August is an excellent month for Phu Quoc's spa and wellness scene — resorts with large spa facilities are less busy than in January, staff have more time for each client, and rates are below peak.

Ham Ninh fishing village (east coast, stilted houses over the water) is particularly photogenic in August — surrounded by dramatic monsoon cloud formations and lush jungle backdrop.

common questions

FAQ — Bali in August

Is August better or worse than July in Phu Quoc?

Essentially the same. Both are monsoon months with similar rainfall, similar sea conditions, and similar visitor volumes (European summer holiday crowd). August may have very slightly calmer days toward the end of the month as the monsoon begins its slow seasonal retreat. Both months are viable but not ideal for beach-focused holidays.

What is the best hotel strategy for August in Phu Quoc?

August is a good month to book a resort with indoor and covered facilities — a pool, a spa, a good restaurant. Beachfront access matters less when Long Beach is rough. Resorts in Long Beach's quieter northern section or those on Ong Lang Beach (northwest) offer more sheltered positions. Ong Lang Beach in particular can be calmer than Long Beach proper during southwest monsoon.

Is Ong Lang Beach calmer than Long Beach in August?

Ong Lang Beach (northwest Phu Quoc) faces slightly northwest rather than directly west and can be marginally calmer than Long Beach proper during southwest monsoon. It's a quieter, more boutique beach with fewer crowds year-round. Worth considering as a base for August visits — several good boutique resorts are located here.
