questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of restaurants are in Cebu's different areas?

Cebu City has the most diverse and authentic local dining — legendary lechon houses, carenderias (local canteens) serving home-style Filipino food, and a growing creative restaurant scene in Lahug, IT Park, and Crossroads. Mactan Island's restaurant scene skews toward resort dining rooms and waterfront seafood spots catering to resort guests. South Cebu destinations like Moalboal have a cluster of casual international restaurants (Italian, Mexican, international) serving the dive-tourist crowd, as well as very affordable local eateries. The Camotes Islands and Oslob area have limited but characterful local spots.

Where can I eat the best lechon in Cebu?

Cebu lechon is widely considered the best in the Philippines — roasted whole over charcoal with a crackling thin skin and herbaceous, juicy meat flavoured from the inside with lemongrass, garlic, and native spices. The most celebrated spots are in Cebu City: CNT Lechon (SM City branch is most accessible), Zubuchon (multiple branches, also has a Mactan location), Rico's Lechon, and Carcar City's lechon market — about an hour south of Cebu City — where entire roasted pigs are sold from market stalls. These are not available on Mactan Island resort menus; you need to visit Cebu City or take a day trip south.

Is there good dining near the Oslob whale shark area and Moalboal?

Both are primarily activity destinations rather than culinary ones. Oslob town has simple local eateries and a few tourist-oriented restaurants near the whale shark watching site. Moalboal's Panagsama Beach has a concentrated strip of restaurants — mostly casual international spots (pasta, pizza, burgers) alongside budget Filipino eateries — that have evolved to serve the diving community. The food is good value and satisfying but not a destination in itself. For serious dining, return to Cebu City.
