quick answer

Many nationalities can enter Vietnam (including Phu Quoc) without a visa for 45 days — including citizens of the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea, and Australia (as of 2023 expansion). Citizens of Russia, Belarus, and several ASEAN countries also qualify. For other nationalities, the Vietnam e-Visa costs USD 25 and allows up to 90 days. Phu Quoc previously had a special 30-day visa exemption for all nationalities — check current status before departure.

Who Can Visit Phu Quoc Without a Visa?

Vietnam significantly expanded its visa-free list in August 2023. Citizens of the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and most other Western European countries now receive a 45-day visa-free stay. Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and most ASEAN nations are also included.

Russia, Belarus, and several Eastern European and Scandinavian countries have had long-standing visa-free arrangements with Vietnam. Check the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for the current complete list — the policy has been actively updated and some new countries have been added since 2023.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Having a confirmed onward or return ticket is advisable — Phu Quoc International Airport immigration can request proof of departure.

Vietnam e-Visa — The Easiest Option for Others

For nationalities not on the visa-free list, the Vietnam e-Visa is the simplest route. Apply online at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn — the fee is USD 25 and processing takes 3–5 business days. The e-Visa is valid for up to 90 days and supports single or multiple entries.

You'll need a passport-style photo, a scan of your passport biodata page, and a credit or debit card for payment. Once approved, an e-Visa approval letter is emailed — print it or save it on your phone and present on arrival.

The e-Visa eliminates the need for a visa agency or embassy visit. It can be used at all international entry points including Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC).

The Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone Exemption

Phu Quoc has historically been designated a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with a separate 30-day visa exemption applicable to all nationalities (including those normally requiring a visa for mainland Vietnam). This policy allowed visitors from countries like China and India to visit Phu Quoc without any visa documentation.

Vietnam has periodically reviewed and adjusted this SEZ exemption. Before travelling, verify the current status of the Phu Quoc SEZ exemption on the official Vietnamese immigration website or with your airline, as policies can change with short notice.

Visitors under the SEZ exemption were historically restricted to Phu Quoc Island — visiting Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or other mainland Vietnam destinations required a separate visa. The expanded national visa-free policy (for qualifying nationalities) now makes the SEZ exemption less relevant for many travellers.

questions & answers

How do I apply for a Vietnam e-Visa?

Apply at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. Submit your passport scan, photo, and USD 25 payment. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Print the approval or save it digitally — you present it at the airport.
