Visiting Palawan in September

September is Palawan's most challenging month. The southwest monsoon delivers some of the year's heaviest rainfall, seas are at their roughest, and El Nido's island hopping is largely suspended. Some guesthouses close for maintenance. The island is emptier than at any other time of year. The Underground River remains accessible, but even its approach by boat from Sabang can be affected on very rough days. September requires complete flexibility and realistic expectations — it's for travellers who see empty beaches and near-zero crowds as the draw, not a deterrent.

travel tips

Travel Tips for September

September in Palawan is not recommended for most travellers. If you go, treat it as an adventure rather than a classic beach holiday — be prepared for cancelled tours, extended rainy days, and limited dining options in El Nido.

Puerto Princesa is a significantly better September base than El Nido — more dining options, more weather-independent activities, and access to the Underground River.

Monitor typhoon forecasts daily. September is peak typhoon season for the Philippines — travel insurance with typhoon cancellation cover is essential for September visits.

common questions

FAQ — Bali in September

Is it worth visiting Palawan in September?

Only if you have complete schedule flexibility, are genuinely comfortable with frequent rain and rough seas, and want the cheapest Palawan experience possible. For island hopping and lagoon snorkelling, September is the worst month. For the Underground River, wildlife, and a quiet local experience at minimal cost, it's viable but demanding.

Which is safer in September — El Nido or Coron?

Puerto Princesa is the safest September base — all land-accessible. Between El Nido and Coron, both have rough sea access. Coron's main attractions (Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon) are accessed by short boat rides from Coron Town — slightly more sheltered than El Nido's open Bacuit Bay crossing. Very marginal advantage to Coron.

How much does El Nido accommodation cost in September?

September is Palawan's cheapest month. Budget guesthouses in El Nido Town can drop to PHP 400–800/night; mid-range hotels go for PHP 1,500–3,000; upscale resorts offer significant discounts. Beachfront resorts that charge PHP 8,000–12,000 in January can be booked for PHP 2,500–4,000 in September.
