Visiting Palawan in December

December in Palawan is the return of peak season. The northeast monsoon is firmly established, El Nido's Bacuit Bay is calm and turquoise, and the island fills progressively through the month as Christmas and New Year approaches. El Nido's main street gets festive decorations, resort restaurants offer Christmas menus, and the beach bars fill with international and domestic visitors celebrating year-end in paradise. New Year's Eve in El Nido — fireworks over the bay from the beach — is one of the Philippines' most spectacular celebrations. Book everything months ahead.

travel tips

Travel Tips for December

Book El Nido accommodation for 25–31 December at least 4–6 months ahead — the best beachfront properties and hilltop resorts sell out completely for the New Year's Eve window.

The cash ATM shortage in El Nido is most acute in late December. Withdraw extra cash in Puerto Princesa before travelling to El Nido — budget conservatively for the New Year's Eve premium pricing at restaurants.

Early December (1–15 December) is an excellent window — conditions are as good as late December but with fewer crowds and noticeably lower prices. The holiday influx builds from about 18 December.

common questions

FAQ — Bali in December

Is December a good month to visit Palawan?

Excellent, particularly early December. Sea conditions are ideal, El Nido's lagoons are at their most beautiful, and the Christmas atmosphere adds a festive dimension. Late December (20 December–3 January) is the busiest and most expensive period — worth experiencing for New Year's Eve but requires careful advance booking and extra budget.

How busy is El Nido in December?

Early December is manageable — busier than November but not overwhelming. From around 18 December, visitor numbers escalate significantly as Christmas week begins. Christmas Day through New Year's Day is peak of peaks — island hopping boats are full, restaurants have queues, and ATMs are quickly depleted. Plan extra time for everything in late December.

What is New Year's Eve like in El Nido?

New Year's Eve in El Nido is a unique experience — fireworks exploding over the bay with limestone karst islands silhouetted against the night sky. The beach fills with people from around 9 pm. Restaurants offer New Year's Eve set menus (book days ahead). Midnight is celebrated with firecrackers, countdown, and festivities that continue to the early hours on the beach.
