Bang Tao and the Laguna resort complex have the highest concentration of luxury integrated resort hotels — Banyan Tree, Anantara, and Cassia among others share a lagoon system with private beaches. Surin has boutique luxury properties like Twin Palms and The Surin. Kata Noi (a small, quiet cove south of Kata) has the legendary Kata Rocks and Boathouse properties. Phuket Town is an increasingly popular base, especially for repeat visitors who have already done the beach scene. The restored Sino-Portuguese shophouse hotels in the Old Town (Casa Blanca, Memory at On On Hotel, Sino House) offer heritage character and excellent value compared to beach resorts. You are 20–30 minutes from most beaches by scooter or car. The tradeoff is daily transport cost to reach the beach, which makes Phuket Town better suited to those who plan to explore widely around the island (temples, markets, day trips to Phang Nga Bay) than those who want beach-at-the-doorstep access. The food scene is significantly better than any beach area.
