Bali Area GuideUluwatu, Bali, Indonesia

Uluwatu, Bali

World-class surf breaks, dramatic cliff temples, and Bali's most exclusive villas

Uluwatu occupies the southern tip of the Bukit peninsula — a limestone plateau rising 70–100 metres above the Indian Ocean, with surf breaks of international renown accessible via cliff staircases. Padang Padang, Bingin, Impossibles, and Uluwatu itself rank among the world's most consistent surf destinations for intermediate to advanced surfers. Above the water, the dramatic cliffs host Pura Luhur Uluwatu — one of Bali's six key directional temples, perched 70 metres above the ocean with sweeping views and a nightly kecak fire dance at sunset. The plateau is also home to some of Bali's most exclusive clifftop villas and boutique hotels, particularly around Suluban and Single Fin. The area is quieter and less trafficked than south Bali's main tourist zones.

  • Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple — Bali's iconic clifftop temple with sunset kecak dance performances
  • Uluwatu surf break — one of the world's most consistent and powerful left-hand reef breaks
  • Single Fin — the legendary cliff-edge bar overlooking the Uluwatu surf break at sunset

Know Before You Base Yourself in Uluwatu

Who Uluwatu suits best

Uluwatu is strongest for surfers, villa stays, and travellers who want dramatic scenery with less urban sprawl. It is weaker for walkability and casual point-to-point exploration than Seminyak or Sanur.

How to plan around the layout

The Bukit peninsula feels spread out, so short-looking distances still need a scooter or driver. Pick one sub-area to stay in and group beach, temple, and dinner plans to avoid spending the trip in transport.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What level of surfer is Uluwatu for?

Uluwatu's main break is for experienced surfers — it is a powerful, barrelling left-hand reef break that closes out in large swell and requires a cave entry/exit. Intermediate surfers can handle it in smaller conditions (2–4 ft). Bingin and Dreamland are more forgiving for intermediate surfers. Padang Padang is world-class and experts-only in overhead surf. Beginners should surf Kuta or Seminyak before attempting the Bukit peninsula breaks.

How do I get to Uluwatu from Seminyak or Ubud?

Uluwatu is approximately 25 km south of Seminyak (40–60 minutes by Grab) and 55 km from Ubud (90 minutes by car). There is no reliable public transport — Grab or a pre-arranged driver is the practical option. Many visitors combine Uluwatu temple and the kecak sunset dance (6 pm performance) with a Jimbaran Bay seafood dinner on the same evening.
