Candidasa, Bali

East Bali gateway — reef diving, traditional villages, and Padangbai ferries

Candidasa is a small resort town on Bali's east coast, historically used as a staging point for diving, snorkelling, and the ferry crossing to Lombok and the Gili Islands from nearby Padangbai. The original Candidasa beach was largely lost to erosion when protective reef was removed for lime production in the 1970s — breakwaters now line the front of the remaining beach. The area is quieter than south Bali with a low-key atmosphere suited to travellers who want diving, cycling through traditional villages, and access to east Bali's cultural heartland including Tirta Gangga water palace and Tenganan — one of Bali's original Bali Aga (pre-Hindu) villages.

  • Tirta Gangga water palace — ornate royal bathing complex surrounded by rice terraces
  • Tenganan Pegringsingan — pre-Hindu Bali Aga village famous for double-ikat geringsing weaving
  • Padangbai fast boat hub — main gateway for Gili Islands and Lombok ferries

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Candidasa a good base for east Bali?

Yes — Candidasa is well-positioned for exploring east Bali's cultural sites (Tirta Gangga, Tenganan, Sidemen Valley) and for diving around White Sand Beach and the area's dive sites. The town itself is small and lacks the range of restaurants and nightlife of south Bali, but the quietness is the point. It works best as a 2-night cultural detour combined with a dive day rather than a primary beach destination.
