Dry season vs. wet season — when to go for weather, crowds, and prices
Verified 2026 · Island Seeker Editorial
quick answer
The best time to visit Guam is February to April — the heart of the dry season. Rainfall is at its lowest, skies are clear, and sea conditions are ideal for beaches, snorkeling, and diving. January to May is the broader dry season and all of it is excellent for travel, though January–March is peak season with the highest hotel prices.

January to May is Guam's dry season — the time of year when rainfall is lowest, humidity is more manageable, and sunshine is most reliable. February through April is the peak of the dry season: days are typically clear, seas are calm, and snorkeling and diving visibility is at its best (often 20–30m+). This is when Guam is at its most photogenic.
January through March is also peak tourist season — primarily Japanese and Korean visitors taking advantage of school holidays and the best weather. Hotel rates are highest during this period, and popular tours and restaurants fill up more quickly. Book accommodation and activities well in advance for January–March travel.
April and May offer an excellent compromise: still dry season weather, with noticeably fewer crowds and slightly lower prices than January–March. May in particular is often overlooked by visitors and can be an excellent value window.
June and December are transitional months — between the dry and wet seasons. Weather in both months is generally good but increasingly variable. June marks the beginning of typhoon season (though typhoons before July are uncommon) and the start of the wet season's afternoon showers. December transitions out of the typhoon season with improving conditions through the month.
Both months offer lower hotel rates than peak season and moderate visitor numbers. June can have more cloud cover but is still excellent for water activities. December from mid-month onwards is one of the island's most festive periods, with Christmas markets and cultural events adding to the experience.
July through November is Guam's wet season and typhoon season. Afternoon showers are common and can be heavy. Typhoon risk is greatest from July through September — while direct hits are not guaranteed every year, the possibility of a typhoon during this period is real and can disrupt travel plans significantly.
The upside of wet season travel is considerable: hotel rates drop 30–50% compared to peak season, the island is far less crowded, and activities still operate on most days (rain showers are typically short and followed by sunshine). Waterfalls and jungle trails are at their most spectacular with maximum water flow. Divers who don't mind reduced visibility on exposed sites can find excellent conditions on sheltered dive sites year-round.
If travelling during the wet season, purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers typhoon-related cancellations. Monitor the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) for storm advisories. Most years, the wet season passes without a direct typhoon hit — but being prepared is essential.
January–February: Peak dry season, coolest temperatures, clearest skies, best diving visibility. Busiest and most expensive period. February is widely considered the single best month to visit.
March–April: Excellent weather continues. April sees fewer crowds than January–March with comparable conditions. Cherry blossom season in Japan and Korea sends waves of visitors in late March.
May: Often underrated — still dry season, noticeable drop in crowds, beginning of low-season pricing. One of the best value months.
June: Transitional month. Increasing cloud cover and afternoon showers begin, but weather is generally still pleasant. Prices drop significantly.
July–September: Typhoon season peak. Wetter, more unpredictable weather. Significant price drops. Plan with flexibility.
October–November: End of typhoon season. Weather improves through November. Good shoulder value for flexible travellers.
December: Festive season with improving weather. Christmas and New Year events across the island. Hotel rates start rising from mid-December.
questions & answers
What is the best month to visit Guam?
February is widely considered the single best month to visit Guam — it sits at the heart of the dry season, with the lowest rainfall of the year, clear skies, and excellent sea conditions for beaches and water activities. March and April are also excellent, with slightly fewer crowds than January–February peak. April–May offers the best weather-to-value ratio for budget-conscious travellers.
Is Guam worth visiting in the wet season?
Yes — the wet season (July–November) can be a good time to visit Guam if you're flexible and price-conscious. Hotel rates drop 30–50%, crowds thin significantly, and activities still run on most days (rain is often short and followed by sunshine). The main risk is typhoons (peak July–September), which can disrupt plans. Purchase travel insurance that covers typhoon cancellations and monitor JTWC weather advisories during this period.
Does Guam get typhoons?
Yes — Guam is in the western Pacific typhoon belt. Typhoon season officially runs from June through November, with the highest risk from July through September. Direct hits are not guaranteed every year, but they do occur. Notable typhoons have struck Guam in recent decades. If travelling during typhoon season, book refundable accommodation and flights where possible, and purchase travel insurance covering typhoon disruptions.
What is the weather like in Guam in December and January?
December and January are among the best months to visit Guam. Both fall within the dry season — December is transitional but improving, while January is firmly in peak dry season with minimal rainfall and reliable sunshine. Temperatures are warm but slightly cooler and less humid than the wet season months. January is peak tourist season with the highest hotel rates; book early.
