Bali Area GuideUbud, Bali, Indonesia

Ubud, Bali

Bali's cultural heart — rice terraces, temples, yoga, and world-class wellness

Ubud sits in the cool interior highlands of Bali at approximately 300 metres elevation, surrounded by terraced rice paddies, tropical jungle, and a river gorge. It is the island's undisputed centre for arts, culture, and wellness — home to the Ubud Royal Palace, Puri Lukisan Museum, hundreds of artisan workshops, and the Monkey Forest sanctuary. The famous Tegallalang and Jatiluwih rice terraces are easily accessible. Ubud has one of the world's most concentrated collections of yoga studios, wellness retreats, and spa facilities. The restaurants on and around Jalan Dewi Sita offer exceptional farm-to-table cuisine alongside traditional warungs. Ubud experiences a cooler, wetter microclimate than coastal Bali and is less humid — a meaningful relief from beach zone heat.

  • Tegallalang Rice Terraces — the most photographed landscape in Bali
  • Ubud Monkey Forest — 700+ macaques in a sacred Hindu temple forest
  • Yoga Barn and Radiantly Alive — two of Asia's most renowned yoga retreat centres

Know Before You Base Yourself in Ubud

Who Ubud suits best

Ubud is the best Bali base for culture, wellness, and inland scenery. It rewards travellers who enjoy temples, craft, food, and slower days more than those who want to walk to the beach.

How long to stay

Three nights is a strong minimum if Ubud is a major part of the trip. That gives enough room for central sights, a rice-terrace day, and one slower spa or café day without reducing the area to a checklist.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from the airport to Ubud?

Ubud is approximately 35–40 km from Ngurah Rai Airport and takes 60–90 minutes by taxi or Grab, depending on traffic. There is no public bus direct service. Pre-booking a Grab from the app inside the airport zone is the most reliable and affordable option (typically IDR 150,000–200,000). Hotel-arranged transfers typically cost IDR 200,000–350,000. Traffic through Denpasar and Mas can be heavy; the bypass road reduces transit time significantly.

Is Ubud worth more than one night?

Ubud rewards a minimum of 2–3 nights. The classic day-one checklist (Monkey Forest, Tegallalang, Royal Palace, cooking class) fills a full day. A second day allows for a sunrise trek to Mount Batur (pre-booked guided hike), a rice terrace cycle, and an evening kecak fire dance at Uluwatu. Three nights adds time for the full Jatiluwih UNESCO rice terrace circuit, a spa day, and exploration of the quieter artist villages of Penestanan, Peliatan, and Mas.
