Why people choose Canggu
Canggu is the strongest fit for travellers who want Bali's café culture, surf-adjacent energy, and a social remote-work scene. It is less ideal for a calm, car-free holiday or a deeply traditional cultural stay.

Surf, rice paddies, and Bali's coolest digital nomad enclave
Canggu is the epicentre of Bali's surf-and-wellness scene — a rapidly evolved village north of Seminyak that has become a global magnet for digital nomads, surfers, and health-conscious travellers. Echo Beach and Berawa Beach offer reliable left-hand and right-hand breaks for intermediate to advanced surfers, while the surrounding rice paddies provide an incongruous backdrop to the dense strip of cafes, co-working spaces, yoga studios, and vegan restaurants along Jalan Batu Bolong. The famous Old Man's beach bar is a rite of passage; Deus Ex Machina cafe-gallery-motorcycle-temple is a Canggu institution. Unlike Seminyak's polished glamour, Canggu maintains a relaxed, creative energy where fashionable streetwear and surfboards coexist with rice farmers.

Choose accommodation close to the part of Canggu you will use most, because short map distances can turn into long scooter rides. Pererenan and the quieter northern edge usually feel easier than central Batu Bolong.

questions & answers
Is Canggu good for beginner surfers?
Canggu's main breaks — Echo Beach and Berawa — are best for intermediate to advanced surfers due to powerful reef breaks and strong rip currents. Beginner surfers are better starting at Kuta or Seminyak's beach breaks before progressing to Canggu. Several surf schools in Canggu offer lessons, but instructors will typically use calmer spots. Batu Bolong beach has a slightly gentler entry point for beginners during smaller swells.
Has Canggu become too touristy?
Canggu has changed dramatically since 2015 — traffic is now significant, prices have risen sharply, and the rice paddy atmosphere is increasingly surrounded by construction. However, it remains one of Bali's most vibrant and creative neighbourhoods with an exceptional café and restaurant scene. Visiting in shoulder season (May, June, October) reduces crowds. The northern edge of Canggu near Pererenan and Cemagi retains more of the original village character.
