Top 10 Beaches in Koh Lanta

Ranked by verified guest reviews — updated from live ratings

By Island Seeker Editorial Team·Updated March 2026

Koh Lanta's beaches run along the entire west coast — 27km from Saladan in the north to the national park in the south. Unlike Phuket or Samui, Koh Lanta's west-coast beaches all face the same direction (due west), meaning sunsets are spectacular from every one of them. The character changes dramatically from north to south: Hat Khlong Dao is wide and busy; Ao Phra Ae (Long Beach) is the longest; Relax Bay lives up to its name; Khlong Khong has a bar scene; Nui Beach is secluded; and Kantiang Bay is perhaps the most beautiful. All are far less crowded than equivalent Phuket beaches.

insider tips

What to Know Before You Go

All west-coast beaches face due west — every beach has sunset views

Unlike beaches on Phuket where sunset quality varies by location, Koh Lanta's entire west coast faces the Andaman Sea directly west. Every beach from Hat Khlong Dao to Kantiang Bay offers a spectacular sunset over open water. The south end of Hat Khlong Dao and the small promontories between beaches often offer particularly panoramic viewpoints.

Nui Beach requires effort — and rewards it

Nui Beach is accessible only by a steep 15-minute walk down a jungle trail (from a signed turnoff on the main road) or by long-tail boat from Kantiang Bay. The walk is manageable but challenging in flip-flops. The beach itself — a small crescent of white sand in a bay enclosed by forested hills — is among the most beautiful on the island and sees relatively few visitors despite its reputation.

Khlong Khong beach has the island's best bar scene

Khlong Khong, about 25km south of Saladan, has developed as a backpacker enclave with budget guesthouses, laid-back beach bars, and fire shows in the evenings. The beach itself is beautiful and there's a good snorkelling reef accessible by kayak. It's the most social of Koh Lanta's beaches without being a full party scene.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Which beach in Koh Lanta is best for swimming?

During the dry season (November–April), Hat Khlong Dao and Ao Phra Ae (Long Beach) are the best for swimming — long sandy stretches, gentle entry, and calm water. Kantiang Bay in the south is also excellent. Nui Beach is beautiful but has a rocky entry and stronger current. During the wet season, all west-coast beaches can have rough surf — check conditions and respect red flags.

What is the most beautiful beach in Koh Lanta?

Most experienced visitors name Kantiang Bay as the most beautiful beach on the island — a perfect horseshoe bay backed by jungle hills, with crystalline water and minimal development relative to the north. Nui Beach (accessible by hiking trail or long-tail boat) is wilder and more dramatic. For convenience combined with beauty, Ao Phra Ae (Long Beach) is hard to beat.

Are the beaches in Koh Lanta crowded?

Koh Lanta beaches are significantly less crowded than equivalent beaches on Phuket, Koh Samui, or Krabi's Ao Nang. Even at peak season (December–February), Hat Khlong Dao has space to find a quiet patch. The beaches south of Khlong Nin become progressively less visited — Kantiang Bay and Nui Beach see only a fraction of the north's traffic.

Can I walk between beaches in Koh Lanta?

Not along the coast — there's no continuous beach walkway between Koh Lanta's beaches. The main road runs parallel to the coast slightly inland, with access tracks to each beach. To move between beaches, rent a motorbike or use a songthaew on the main road. Hat Khlong Dao is the only beach where you can walk the full length (about 2.5km) continuously.
