Destination Comparison

Cebu vs Coron

🇵🇭 Cebuvs🇵🇭 Coron

Philippines' two greatest diving destinations — wreck diving vs marine wildlife compared

By Island Seeker Editorial Team·Updated March 2026
Coron:Palawan's WWII wreck diving capital — a fleet of Japanese warships sunk in 1944 lying in the clear waters of Busuanga, surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons.

Cebu and Coron are both world-class Philippine dive destinations, but they offer completely different experiences underwater. Cebu is about marine wildlife: the sardine run at Moalboal, thresher sharks at Malapascua, and whale sharks in Oslob represent some of the most spectacular pelagic encounters available anywhere. Coron is about wrecks: a Japanese WWII fleet sunk in a single US naval air strike in September 1944, now lying in clear 10–40 metre water teeming with marine life — one of the world's top wreck diving sites. If you love wreck diving, Coron is exceptional. If marine wildlife is your passion, Cebu is hard to beat.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cebu or Coron better for scuba diving?

It depends on your diving style. Coron is better for wreck diving — it has one of the world's greatest collections of diveable WWII Japanese shipwrecks, lying in clear water at accessible depths. Cebu is better for marine wildlife — the sardine run, thresher sharks, and whale sharks are globally exceptional experiences. If you dive for wrecks, Coron. If you dive for marine life, Cebu.

Can I combine Cebu and Coron in one trip?

Yes — a popular Philippine diving circuit. Fly into Cebu, dive Moalboal and Malapascua (4–5 days), fly Cebu–Manila–Coron (Busuanga) for wreck diving and lagoons (4–5 days), fly back from Coron to Manila. Total: 10–12 days. This is the classic Philippines diving trip combining both marine wildlife and WWII wrecks.

Is Coron good for non-divers?

Coron is better for non-divers than it's often given credit for — the island-hopping tour (Twin Lagoon, Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake swimming) is genuinely stunning snorkelling and scenery. However, without diving, you exhaust the main attractions in 2–3 days. Cebu has far more to offer non-divers: a major city, canyoneering, island-hopping, whale shark snorkelling, and cultural sites.
