Sumilon Island Sandbar
A small island off Oslob in the far south, ringed by a shifting white sandbar and a protected marine sanctuary with clear water and healthy reef. A popular day trip for snorkelling, swimming, and beach time.
About
Sumilon Island, just off the coast of Oslob at Cebu's far southern end, is best known for its beautiful white sandbar — a tongue of fine sand that shifts shape and position with the seasons and tides, curving out into clear, shallow turquoise water. The island is the site of the Philippines' first marine protected area, established in 1974, and the decades of protection show in the healthy reef and good snorkelling and diving just offshore. Most of the island is occupied by a single resort, but day-trippers can visit the sandbar and beaches by short boat from the Oslob mainland, swimming, snorkelling, and lazing on the sand, often as part of a wider south-Cebu trip. Because southern Oslob is a long drive from Cebu City (around three hours), Sumilon is usually combined with other southern sights and the area's well-known early-morning marine activities into a full day or an overnight stay.
