Visiting Bali in March

March in Bali is defined by Nyepi — the Balinese Day of Silence and Hindu New Year — one of the most extraordinary cultural events in all of Southeast Asia. The entire island shuts down for 24 hours: no flights, no cars, no lights, no noise. The night before, villages parade enormous demonic Ogoh-Ogoh effigies through the streets in a spectacular procession. Late March sees the wet season beginning to ease.

Nyepi — Bali Day of Silence

Date varies by Balinese Saka calendar — check exact date for 2026

The most sacred day in the Balinese Hindu calendar. The entire island observes 24 hours of silence: no vehicles, no flights, no electricity visible from outside, no work or entertainment. Tourists must remain inside their accommodation. The silence is profound and otherworldly.

Ogoh-Ogoh Parade (eve of Nyepi)

Evening before Nyepi

The night before Nyepi, communities parade enormous, elaborately crafted demon effigies (Ogoh-Ogoh) through the streets with torches and gamelan music. The effigies are then burned to symbolically cleanse the world of evil. One of the most spectacular spectacles in Bali.

Bali Spirit Festival

Usually late March or early April — check current year dates

An internationally renowned yoga, dance, and world music festival held in Ubud. Workshops, performances, and community events across several days.

travel tips

Travel Tips for March

Check the exact date of Nyepi for 2026 before booking — no flights operate in or out of Bali on Nyepi day, and your hotel will be on lockdown.

Book accommodation in a village neighbourhood for the best view of the Ogoh-Ogoh parade — homestays and small guesthouses in Ubud or Seminyak residential areas are ideal.

March is transitional — bring both rain gear and light clothing, as the second half of March can be significantly drier than January–February.

common questions

FAQ — Bali in March

What happens during Nyepi in Bali?

Nyepi is a day of complete island-wide silence and stillness. All roads are closed to vehicles and pedestrians, all businesses and shops are shut, the airport is closed, and even lights must be kept off or covered at night. Tourists are required to stay within their accommodation — hotel gardens are usually permitted, but the streets are off-limits. The experience is one of the most extraordinary in Asia: Bali, one of the world's busiest tourist destinations, in complete silence for 24 hours.

Should I avoid visiting Bali during Nyepi?

It depends on your priorities. If you want to experience the Ogoh-Ogoh parade (an unforgettable spectacle) and the eerie calm of Nyepi itself, plan your trip around it and embrace the unusual day in your accommodation. If you have connecting flights on Nyepi day, definitely reschedule — no flights operate. If you dislike being confined, avoid the Nyepi period. Most visitors who experience Nyepi describe it as a highlight of their Bali trip.

Is March a good time to visit Bali weather-wise?

March is mixed. The first half can still be very rainy, but by mid-to-late March the rain often begins to ease and sunny days become more frequent. It's not as reliable as May–September, but it's noticeably improving. March also has some of the year's best rice terrace photography — the paddies are at peak green before the dry season harvest.

What is the Bali Spirit Festival?

The Bali Spirit Festival is an annual multi-day yoga, dance, and world music event held in Ubud. It features workshops with internationally renowned teachers, live performances, and community healing ceremonies. It attracts visitors from around the world and provides a deep immersion into Ubud's spiritual culture. Check the official website for exact 2026 dates as they vary year to year.
