El Nido Grilled Lobster

Palawan — especially El Nido and Coron — is one of the cheapest places on earth to eat lobster fresh off the boat. Spiny lobster split, brushed with garlic butter, and grilled over coals, served by weight against a backdrop of limestone cliffs.

About this dish

Few experiences capture Palawan's particular magic like eating fresh grilled lobster on a beach beneath towering limestone karst — and few places on earth make it so affordable. The spiny lobster (banagan) caught in the rich waters around El Nido and Coron lacks the big front claws of cold-water lobster but delivers sweet, dense tail meat, and because it is landed locally and sold by weight, a whole lobster here can cost a fraction of its price almost anywhere else. At the beachfront seafood grills and 'dampa'-style markets, you choose your lobster live, watch it split and brushed with garlic butter, and have it grilled over coconut-husk coals until the shell turns scarlet and the meat just sets. Served with rice, calamansi, and garlic-spiced vinegar, often as the centrepiece of a wider seafood platter, it is the affordable luxury at the heart of Palawan's island-hopping food scene.
