Destination Comparison
Two Pacific island destinations — which is right for your trip?
Guam and Okinawa are two of the most popular Pacific island getaways for Japanese and Korean travellers, and they are often compared as alternatives to each other. Both offer tropical beaches, warm clear water, and a relaxed atmosphere — but the experience is very different. Guam is a US territory with a duty-free, English-speaking resort scene. Okinawa is a culturally rich Japanese prefecture with some of the world's most pristine dive sites and its own distinct Ryukyuan cuisine and traditions. Here is a head-to-head comparison to help you decide.

questions & answers
Is Guam or Okinawa better for shopping?
Guam is significantly better for shopping. As a duty-free port with no general sales tax, luxury goods — cosmetics, perfumes, spirits, tobacco, watches — can cost 30–40% less than in Japan or Korea. T Galleria by DFS and Guam Premium Outlets are the key destinations. Okinawa has interesting local crafts but no duty-free advantage.
Which is closer — Guam or Okinawa — from Japan?
Okinawa is closer from most Japanese cities. Tokyo to Okinawa is about 2.5 hours; Tokyo to Guam is about 3.5 hours. From Osaka or Fukuoka the gap is similar. Okinawa also has more budget carrier options from within Japan. However, Guam may be cheaper and easier for travellers coming from outside Japan.
Is Guam cheaper than Okinawa?
It depends on the category. Shopping is cheaper in Guam (duty-free). Accommodation in Okinawa outside peak resort areas is generally less expensive than Guam's Tumon resort strip. Food is cheaper in Okinawa. Daily budget in Guam runs $150–$300+ USD for a mid-range trip; a similar Okinawa trip might cost ¥10,000–¥18,000 per day.
