Best Beaches
Ranked by verified guest reviews — from surf breaks to secluded coves
Bali's beaches are extraordinarily varied — from the grey volcanic sand of Kuta and the black sand of Amed's diving coast to the blinding white sands of Nusa Dua's lagoon and the dramatic limestone cliff-backed coves of the Bukit Peninsula. The southwest coast (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu) catches the Indian Ocean swells that make Bali's waves famous worldwide — but the same swells create powerful rip currents that require respect. The calmer east-facing beaches of Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Padang Bai are gentler for families and snorkellers. The hidden beaches below the cliffs of Uluwatu — Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan — are Bali's most picturesque and require steep descents to reach. Rankings below reflect verified guest review ratings.
How are these rankings determined?
Rankings are based on verified guest review ratings submitted through the Island Seeker directory. Businesses are sorted by average rating (highest first), with ties broken by total review count and featured status. The list is updated in real time as new verified reviews are submitted. Only active, verified listings appear.
insider tips
Sunset at Seminyak Beach is a social event
Seminyak's famous beach clubs — Potato Head, Ku De Ta (now Kudeta), Finns, and a dozen competitors — line the beach strip between Seminyak and Cerobokan. Sunset on the west-facing beach (which faces the Indian Ocean directly) is dramatic, and the beach clubs turn into the first act of Seminyak's nightlife. Arrive by 5:30 pm to secure a sunbed. Most beach clubs have a minimum spend requirement for sunbed use.
The hidden Bukit beaches require steep descents
The most beautiful beaches on the Bukit Peninsula — Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan, Green Bowl, Thomas Beach — sit below 30–50-metre limestone cliffs and require descents of 100–300 steep steps to reach. Most are not accessible by vehicle — park above and walk down. The descent is manageable for most fit adults, but the return climb in midday heat can be challenging. Bring water and wear footwear you can walk in.
Swim only between the flags at west-coast beaches
Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Canggu beaches have strong rip currents, which can be invisible from the shore. Lifeguards patrol flagged zones on Kuta and Legian — swim only between the flags. At less-patrolled beaches further north and south, assess conditions carefully before entering. The Bali Life Foundation's beach patrol covers Kuta; other beaches have intermittent coverage. Multiple drownings occur each year — even among experienced swimmers.
Nusa Penida's beaches are best as a day trip
Kelingking Beach, Angel's Billabong, Crystal Bay, and Broken Beach on Nusa Penida island are accessible by fast boat from Sanur (45 minutes). Most visitors do Nusa Penida as a full-day tour from Bali — fast boat, local driver, the main sights, back in the evening. Staying overnight on Nusa Penida gives access to beaches before the day-trip crowds arrive. Crystal Bay has excellent snorkelling with mola mola (sunfish) sightings possible July–November.
questions & answers
What is the most beautiful beach in Bali?
Beauty in Bali's beaches depends on what you are looking for. Padang Padang Beach — a horseshoe-shaped cove below limestone cliffs on the Bukit Peninsula — is consistently rated among the most photogenic. Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida (accessed via Bali day trip) is one of the most dramatic coastal views in Southeast Asia. Seminyak Beach is the best for sunset. Nusa Dua is the most pristine and calm. Each offers a completely different experience.
Are Bali's beaches safe for swimming?
The southwest-facing beaches (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Echo Beach) are open-ocean beaches with strong rip currents and wave action — swimming is possible but requires caution and should be limited to flagged areas patrolled by lifeguards. The east-facing and protected beaches (Nusa Dua, Sanur, Padang Bai) are significantly calmer and safer for casual swimming and snorkelling. The hidden coves on the Bukit Peninsula (Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan) have calmer water inside the cove but can have surge and currents at the edges.
Which area of Bali has the best beaches?
The Bukit Peninsula (south Bali) has Bali's most dramatic and picturesque hidden cove beaches — Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan, Green Bowl, Thomas Beach — all reached via steep cliff stairways. Seminyak has Bali's most stylish beach clubs and sunset strip. Nusa Dua has the calmest water and cleanest beach infrastructure. Canggu/Echo Beach is the best all-rounder for surf, sunsets, and beach bars. Sanur is quietest and best for families.
What are Bali's best beaches for surfing?
Kuta Beach is Bali's original surf destination and remains the best for beginners — the long, sandy beach with consistent waves and dozens of surf schools. Canggu's Echo Beach and Berawa Beach attract intermediate surfers. The Bukit Peninsula breaks — Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Impossibles, Bingin — are world-class reef breaks for experienced surfers, with hollow, powerful waves breaking over shallow limestone reef. Surf season for the southwest coast is April to October when the southwest swells produce the most consistent waves.
