Kata Beach

About
Kata, a couple of headlands south of busy Patong, is one of Phuket's most appealing all-round beaches — a gently curving kilometre of soft golden sand that strikes a balance between lively and laid-back. In the high season (roughly November–April) the water is calm and clear, good for swimming and snorkelling around the small island of Koh Pu at its northern end, and the palm-shaded sand is popular with families. When the southwest monsoon brings swell (roughly May–October), Kata becomes the island's friendliest place to learn to surf, with several surf schools and board-rental shacks along the front, though swimmers then need to heed the flag warnings. Behind the beach, Kata is relaxed and walkable, with a good spread of cafés, bars, restaurants, and mid-range hotels, plus the Karon/Kata viewpoint just down the coast — making it a favourite base for visitors who want the beach without Patong's intensity.
