Amed is a string of quiet fishing villages along the northeast coast of Bali, approximately 2.5 hours from the airport. The area has a completely different feel from south Bali — slower, less developed, and genuinely local. The main draws are excellent shore diving and snorkelling (the Japanese shipwreck USAT Liberty in nearby Tulamben is one of the world's most accessible wreck dives), dramatic views of Mount Agung volcano, and the traditional salt farming villages. Amed's black-sand beaches are not swimming beaches in the conventional sense but are beautiful and uncrowded. The accommodation is primarily small, locally owned dive guesthouses and bungalows. Amed is a favourite of divers, free divers, and those seeking quiet, authentic Bali.

How long does it take to get to Amed from Ubud or the airport?
From Ngurah Rai Airport, Amed takes approximately 2.5–3 hours by car via the coastal highway (varying by traffic). From Ubud, it is 1.5–2 hours. Public transport is inconvenient — minibuses to Amlapura exist from Denpasar but require multiple changes. Most visitors hire a private car or take organised transfers. The drive through Sidemen Valley and along the northeast coast is scenic.
