Ubud Palace & Art Market

The cultural heart of Bali — a royal palace (Puri Saren Agung) hosting nightly Balinese dance, beside a bustling traditional market of crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. The starting point for exploring Ubud on foot.

About

Ubud Palace — Puri Saren Agung — has stood at the crossroads of Ubud since the late 19th century and remains the residence of the local royal family, who played a central role in making Ubud the island's capital of art and culture. Its ornately carved gates, courtyards, and tropical gardens are free to wander by day, but the palace comes alive after dark, when its forecourt becomes an open-air stage for nightly Balinese dance performances — Legong, Barong, and Kecak among them — accompanied by a live gamelan orchestra, an accessible and atmospheric introduction to the island's performing arts. Directly across the road is the Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni), a warren of stalls selling batik, woven bags, carvings, silver, and souvenirs where good-natured haggling is expected. Together they make the obvious starting point for exploring Ubud on foot, within easy reach of the Monkey Forest, Saraswati Temple, and Campuhan Ridge.
