Bali sights
Nusa Penida & Kelingking Beach
A rugged island a short boat ride southeast of Bali, famous for the T-rex-shaped cliff above Kelingking Beach, turquoise coves, and snorkelling with manta rays. Steep trails and big scenery make it a classic full-day trip.
About
Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands off Bali's southeast coast, a wilder, drier, more rugged place reached by a 30–45 minute fast boat from Sanur. In a few short years it has become one of the region's most sought-after day trips, thanks above all to Kelingking Beach — a headland whose curving cliff, viewed from above, uncannily resembles a T-rex, with a tiny crescent of white sand and impossibly blue water far below. The descent to the sand is steep, rough, and not for everyone, but the clifftop viewpoint alone is worth the trip. The island also offers Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach, the natural infinity pool at the foot of the cliffs, and some of the best snorkelling and diving in Bali — Crystal Bay and Manta Point regularly deliver encounters with giant manta rays and, in season, the strange oceanic sunfish (mola mola). Roads are rough; most visitors join an organised tour or hire a driver for the day.
