Amed is a string of quiet fishing villages along the northeast coast of Bali, approximately 2.5 hours from the airport. The area has a completely different feel from south Bali — slower, less developed, and genuinely local. The main draws are excellent shore diving and snorkelling (the Japanese shipwreck USAT Liberty in nearby Tulamben is one of the world's most accessible wreck dives), dramatic views of Mount Agung volcano, and the traditional salt farming villages. Amed's black-sand beaches are not swimming beaches in the conventional sense but are beautiful and uncrowded. The accommodation is primarily small, locally owned dive guesthouses and bungalows.
