Mount Batur Sunrise Trek
A pre-dawn hike up an active 1,717 m volcano in a UNESCO Global Geopark, reaching the summit for sunrise over Lake Batur and a sea of clouds. A steady two-hour climb rather than a technical one.
About
Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active volcano rising 1,717 metres in the Kintamani highlands, set within a vast ancient caldera alongside a crescent lake — a landscape striking enough to be named a UNESCO Global Geopark. The classic experience is the sunrise trek: hikers are collected from their hotels around 2 am, driven to the trailhead, and led up the dark slopes by torchlight to reach the summit before dawn. The climb takes roughly two hours and is steep and loose underfoot in places, but it is a walk rather than a technical climb and is manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness. The reward is watching the sun rise over Lake Batur and Mount Agung beyond, often above a sea of cloud, sometimes with eggs cooked in the volcano's steam vents for breakfast. Local regulations require going with a licensed Kintamani guide; bring a warm layer, as the summit is cold before sunrise.
