Scuba Diving in Guam

WWII wrecks, the Blue Hole, coral walls, and year-round warm-water diving

By Island Seeker Editorial Team·Updated March 2026

Guam is one of the best scuba diving destinations in the western Pacific. The island sits at the edge of the Mariana Trench, surrounded by warm, clear water and diverse marine ecosystems. The headline attraction is Apra Harbour: home to the SMS Cormoran (WWI) and Tokai Maru (WWII) wreck dives — the only dive site on the planet where you can explore wrecks from two different world wars lying side by side. The Blue Hole off Orote Peninsula is Guam's signature natural dive, a vertical crevice that opens at 15m (50ft) and drops to 40m (135ft) with visibility regularly exceeding 30m (100ft). Water temperatures stay constant at 28–30°C (82–86°F) year-round, making every month a viable diving month.

Guam's Best Dive Sites

Apra Harbour hosts Guam's two most iconic dives: the SMS Cormoran (a WWI German raider scuttled in 1917) and the Tokai Maru (a WWII Japanese freighter torpedoed in 1943) lie side by side at 35m (115ft) — a twin-wreck dive found nowhere else on Earth. The Blue Hole on the edge of Orote Peninsula is a vertical underwater cave that opens at 15m (50ft) and drops beyond 40m (135ft), one of the most dramatic drift dives in the western Pacific. Cocos Island off southern Guam has pristine walls, hard coral gardens, and frequent turtle encounters. Ritidian Point's wall dives in the north offer encounters with sharks, eagle rays, and large schools of jacks in a remote, uncrowded setting.

Planning Your Dive Trip in Guam

Guam has numerous PADI-certified dive operators — Fish Eye Marine Park, Sea Eagles Guam, and Micronesian Divers Association among the most established — offering shore dives, boat dives, and certification courses. All offer equipment rental. Water temperatures are constant at 28–30°C year-round; a 3mm shorty wetsuit is sufficient. Visibility in dry season (February–May) regularly reaches 30m. Typhoon season (July–December) can bring reduced visibility and occasional cancellations. Wreck dives in Apra Harbour require at minimum an Open Water certification; the SMS Cormoran dive is best with Advanced Open Water experience. Night dives on Guam's reefs reveal octopus, lionfish, and sleeping turtles rarely seen during daylight.

questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is scuba diving good in Guam?

Yes — Guam is considered one of the premier scuba diving destinations in the Pacific. The island offers a remarkable combination of WWII wreck diving, dramatic wall dives, vibrant coral reefs, and accessible shore dives, all in warm, clear water year-round. The SMS Cormoran and Tokai Maru in Apra Harbour form the only dual-world-war wreck dive site on Earth. The Blue Hole off Orote Peninsula is a world-class natural dive with visibility exceeding 30m.

What are the best dive sites in Guam?

The top dive sites in Guam are: the Blue Hole (Orote Peninsula) — a vertical crevice from 15m to 40m+ depth with exceptional visibility and sightings of large tuna, unicorn fish, and reef sharks; the Tokai Maru and SMS Cormoran wrecks (Apra Harbour) — WWII/WWI wreck dives with intact engine rooms and cargo holds; Gun Beach — one of the best shore dives on the island with turtle, ray, and octopus sightings; and Spanish Steps (Orote Peninsula) — a shallow cove rich with clownfish, jacks, and reef life.

Can beginners scuba dive in Guam?

Yes — Guam has excellent options for beginner divers. Several operators offer PADI Discover Scuba courses (no certification required) that can be completed in a day. Tumon Bay's calm, shallow lagoon is ideal for first dives. MDA (Micronesian Divers Association) has been training divers for over 40 years and has certified nearly 80,000 divers. GTDS (Guam Territorial Diving Service, since 1992) also provides beginner-to-advanced certification courses.

Which dive operators are best in Guam?

The top-rated dive operators in Guam are: MDA (Micronesian Divers Association) — based in Piti, one of the island's oldest and most established dive centres; Scuba Guam — operating 3 boats out of 2 marinas with access to over 80 dive sites; and GTDS (East Hagåtña) — offering wreck diving, boat dives, and certification courses since 1992. Aquaman Charters is also popular for combined dive and snorkel trips.

What is the best time of year to dive in Guam?

Guam's diving is excellent year-round — water temperatures hold at 28–30°C and conditions rarely prevent diving. Visibility is generally best during the dry season (January–June), when calm seas allow 20–30m+ at most sites. The wet season (July–November) brings some surge and reduced visibility at exposed sites, but sheltered sites like Apra Harbour wrecks remain diveable year-round. Typhoon risk peaks August–October and may occasionally close exposed sites.
